Sampling in China

The sample is the cheapest way to find a mistake before it multiplies across the whole quantity. Treat it as a test of the supplier as well as of the product.

The sampling stages

1. Prototype: To confirm technique and overall look.
2. Fit sample: To set measurements and fit.
3. Sales sample: In the final fabric and colour for photography and showing.
4. Pre production sample: The final reference you approve before the quantity starts.

How to comment on a sample

Write your comments point by point with photos and measurements tied to the tech pack. Send them all at once, not in stages, to reduce rounds.

Time and cost

• Ask in advance about the cost of the sample and its shipping and whether it is deducted from the order.
• Allow time for each round: making, shipping and commenting.
• Keep the approved sample with you and with the factory for comparison during inspection later.

Exercise

Log the sampling stages of your product in the sample and production tracker with expected dates, and write the comments on the first sample point by point.
